7 Differences: Lies of P vs. Other Soulsborne Games

Even though Lies of P looks and plays like a Soulsborne game and has tough fighting, it also has a lot of new things to offer.

When Lies of P was first released in 2021, fans of FromSoftware games were thrilled to hear that they would soon be able to play another action RPG. Lies of P is a gory retelling of the famous Pinocchio story. It has many of the same mechanics as the FromSoftware games, but it also has a lot of new things that make it stand out.

Neowiz Games got a lot of ideas from the “Soulsborne” subgenre’s methodical and harsh combat system. Pinocchio must dodge and slash his way through the dark streets of Krat to find his father Gippetto.

Still, Lies of P has just enough new things to set it apart from its similar stories, especially in how it plays with the idea of lying, which is at the heart of the Pinocchio story. Fans of Soulsborne will like a lot of what they see here, but they should also be ready for a few surprises along the way that will make the game feel fresh and new.

The Gramophone

The gramophone system is one of the best ways that Neowiz has made sure the player isn’t constantly being attacked by hordes of enemies.

As players travel through the world, they will find special records that Pinocchio can play on the turntable. It’s not clear yet if all of the music here will be from the game or if there will also be some special tracks from the makers’ other games. Either way, it’s a great addition that really helps the game achieve its European steampunk style.

Telephones

Telephones

In many Soulsborne games, you can only find side quests if you look for them. If you are focused on beating the bosses and fighting your way through the main story, it can be easy to miss them. Also, many of these quests require the player to go back after a certain event has happened. If the player doesn’t know this ahead of time, they could easily miss them.

Lies of P seems to make it easier to find extra quests by having the telephones spell out scary riddles for the player to figure out. Most likely, the telephones will be placed along the main path that leads to the next part of the story. This will make them a better way to lead players to other parts of the world that they might not otherwise visit or think about while following the main plot.

Weapon Crafting

Weapon Crafting

Many of FromSoftware’s games have changed the way weapons work in their own way. In games like Bloodborne, players could improve their cleavers and hacksaws at The Workshop. In Sekiro, however, the Wolf’s sword could not be upgraded at all. This was done so that timing and parries would be more important in battle.

In Lies of P, weapons are handled a little differently. Players can combine parts of different tools they find on their travels to make a weapon they can be proud to use. Players will be able to change both the blade and the grip. The blade affects how hard the weapon hits, and the hilt changes how and how fast the attack moves. With more than 30 basic weapon types and over 100 possible combos, players will be able to customize their characters in a way that was not possible in the Soulsborne games.

Bigger Emphasis On Weapon Durability

Bigger Emphasis On Weapon Durability

Even though weapon longevity was still a part of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, it was often forgotten because it took most weapons so long to actually get worse as they were used. The player would then have to go to a certain place to fix the weapons, or in Dark Souls 3, they could also use Repair Sorcery.

In Lies of P, players will have to pay a lot more attention to how long their weapons last. This is because every time Pinocchio makes an attack or blocks an enemy, the weapon slowly breaks down, no matter how big or strong it is. The good news is that Pinocchio has a grinder built into his arm that can fix any weapon in a matter of seconds. This makes the system much more fun and easier to use this time.

Groggy Mode

Groggy Mode

Staggering an enemy has always been an important part of the Soulsborne games. In games like Bloodborne and Sekiro, you can usually do this by parrying at just the right time.Groggy Mode is a similar mechanic in Lies of P, but the way it makes the enemy weak is a little different.

There is a perfect parry feature in Geometry Dash Subzero that can make an enemy sleepy, but it only works when the player attacks an enemy whose healthbar starts flashing white when they take a certain hit. Once the bar flashes, the enemy will drop down, giving the player a few precious seconds to do a lot of damage. Unlike Sekiro’s Posture Gauge, this doesn’t have a specific meter. Instead, it will randomly show in Lies of P after Pinocchio has done enough damage.

Legion Arms

Legion Arms

Since Pinocchio is truly a puppet, he can equip his mechanical body with Legion Arms. Each of these arms has a different ability that can help him win a fight. Even though this sounds a lot like the Shinobi Prosthetic in Sekrio, the Legion Arm’s powers in Lies of P are much more offensive and destructive. They are more like the Devil Breakers in Devil May Cry 5.

Each Legion Arm has three special powers that can be upgraded to make the weapon stronger and more dangerous on the field. Each Legion Arm also has its own weight class, which will probably affect how quickly Pinocchio moves in battle. Instead of being tied to a certain amount of ammo, Legion Arms can be used through the Legion Gauge, so players will be able to use their explosive effects much more often.

Lying Dialogue Mechanic

Lying Dialogue Mechanic

As Pinocchio tries to stay alive despite his dangerous enemies and the hard world around him, he will be able to talk to some characters and have the option to lie to them. Depending on which lies the player tells, the story will go in a different direction, and the ending will be a bit different. Many of the NPCs in the game have complicated ways of moving forward, so telling a lie could send the player on a completely different quest and story. This is a brilliant way to bring the story of Pinocchio into this retelling.

Every time Pinocchio lies, a message pops up saying that he has, and his body will twitch. This is a hint that if he lies too much, it could hurt him in the future. On the other hand, if Pinocchio lies, he can get some very useful things, so it’s up to the player to decide how dishonest Pinocchio should be throughout the story.
